Roger's reference to himself as "emeritus" was an acknowledgment that he is no longer the lead dog in account management and has largely been put out to pasture. As for his dressing down of Ken, there's no question he was making a subtle threat to Ken's job a la "if you have so much time to write, perhaps you're not working hard enough." That Ken chose yet another nom de plume suggested he understood that to continue following his passion required him to go further underground.scarylawyerguyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03340241283633171546noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5016253077154756564.post-46200104330303147002012-04-17T17:36:37.105-04:002012-04-17T17:36:37.105-04:00I did not believe for a second that Roger convince...I did not believe for a second that Roger convinced him to give up writing.

I'll look again, but I thought Ken put on his acquiescent face when called on the carpet by Roger. He did something similar in Season 4 when Pete said he wanted to make sure Ken could "do as told".

I did not believe for a second that Roger convinced him to give up writing.Jahn Ghaltnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5016253077154756564.post-77950151087199173902012-04-17T17:31:30.811-04:002012-04-17T17:31:30.811-04:00"As Roger notes in a bracing moment of self-a..."As Roger notes in a bracing moment of self-awareness, he is now Emeritus Head of Accounts"

Was that not Mad Men's first portrayal of Roger in a professorial role (briefing Lane on how to wind and dine the Jaguar exec)? Grammarians make my heart go pitter patter. I disagree with your assessment that Ken was non-plussed. I think he was dismayed, Roger was essentially threatening Ken's job - give up writing or face the consequences. Ken just chose to do a work around instead of facing the issue directly.

Two points that were teased out in other recaps - the overt use of death and mayhem - Don drawing a noose, car crashes, two episodes in a row with mass murder, Don's reference to shooting himself rather than going to a suburban dinner party - are pretty dark.

Thanks for reading!!!!scarylawyerguyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03340241283633171546noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5016253077154756564.post-31885687539269281252012-04-16T22:53:44.638-04:002012-04-16T22:53:44.638-04:00From a grammarian:
